This is now against the Google AdSense ToS - do NOT
use images next to your ads. This article is only here for educational
purposes.
Introduction
Placing images next to Google AdSense ads is a method used by many webmasters
to increase their AdSense CTR. Some examples of it can be seen here on this site.
It Is Not Against Policy?
The Google AdSense Policy states that "Web pages may not include incentives
of any kind for users to click on ads. This includes encouraging users to click
on the ads or to visit the advertisers' sites as well as drawing any undue
attention to the ads".
Now although some of you may regard placement of images next to the ads as
drawing undue attention to the ads, it is a method adopted by a very large
proportion of webmasters - some of which have contacted Google to confirm whether
or not it is acceptable.
Google have given a very vague response to this saying that if you "don't draw
undue attention to the ads" it's not breaking the AdSense Programme Policy.
So the approach to take is to leave sufficient room between the image and ad.
If you want to be on the safe side, place a border between the image and ad, either
by placing borders around the image, or a border around the ad. You must also make
sure that the image itself is not drawing undue attention to the ads. Use common
sense here - don't place arrows, flashing or animated images next to them.
What Kind of Images Should I Use?
To make this approach as effective as it can be we'd recommend you place images
that are related to the content next to the ads. For example if you have a website
related to automobiles, place pictures of car related images next to the ads. Try
to be thorough when doing this. Don't place the same images next to the ads on every
page. For example if one of your pages is on tyres, place pictures of tyres next to
the ads. If you have a page about headlights, place pictures of headlights next to
the ads.
How Do I Maximize The Effectiveness of This Approach?
Another method you can use is to use rotating images next to the ads. This can be
done simply by using PHP or Javascript. This will give the page a fresh feel and
prevent the visitor from becoming "ad-blind".
If you don't know how to implement rotating images using either of these codes,
try taking a look at this tutorial on Javascript image rotators.
