An Introduction to Banner Ads

Banner advertisements have been a method of advertising used by webmasters since the early stages of the development of the internet. It makes use of images in order to get an advertising message across to users in an attempt to get them to visit a website.

When banner advertisements were first introduced the click-through-rate (CTR) used to be around 2%, i.e. if the banner ad was shown 100 times it would lead to 2 clicks. However internet users have now started to become blind to these types of advertisements and the CTR has lowered to around 1%.

This isn't to say that banner ads are a useless form of advertising - it can still be extremely successful if implemented correctly. It just means that more care and effort is now required in order to run a successful banner ad campaign.
