Tracking the Performance of Banner Ads

Save this to Del.icio.us

This is crucial in a successful banner ad campaign, just like any other ad campaign. Keep a track of the visitors coming to your site via the banner ad. This could easier be done by viewing the referers in your log files, or by adding extra information to the URL the banner is linking to. For example you could make the banner link to "http://www.MySite.com/pageName.php?from=banner1". If you have any programming knowledge you will realize what I mean by this. The basic idea is that a variable is passed to your page when it loads, which can then be used to record hits from a specific banner etc...

If you do not have programming skills then you could just look at your logs or use website logging software such as Google Analytics. This sort of software makes it easier to see your referring sources, however won't be 100% accurate as people could be referred to your site via other means other than the banner ad itself.

By tracking the performance of your banner ads you can start testing and optimizing your banner ads. For example you could replace the banner image with a new one and see how it performs relative to the old image - this is the same idea as A/B Testing. You could also see if one site performs better than another etc...
